Let's be cute damn heroes!
No nerd knitter worth his/her yarn weight has not at least contemplated making a Jayne hat despite the controversy. It has the perfect combination of being both easy to recognize and easy to execute.

This pattern was specifically designed for my Tentacle Kitty plushie, but modifications are easy for the toy of your choice. Gauge is about 5 stitches x 7 rows per 1 square inch (knitter, know thy gauge!).

You can't stop the signal!

  • Step 1

With orange yarn, CO 84 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.

Place markers at stitches 21, 29, 57, and 66 for the ear flaps. (You can also do this at the end if you want to eyeball about where the flaps will be.)

  • Step 2

Rounds 1-7: (k1, p1)* repeat for ribbed edge

Note: removable stitch markers should remain on the cast-on edge rather than move up.

  • Step 3

    Rounds 8-13: k all

  • Step 4

Round 14: switch to yellow yarn; k all.

  • Step 5

    Round 15: k 24, BO 10, k 15, BO 10, k 25

  • Step 6

  • Step 8

    Round 24: (k 5, k2tog)* repeat

  • Step 9

Round 25: (k 4, k2tog)* repeat; switch to dpns when necessary.

  • Step 10

    Round 26: (k 3, k2tog)* repeat

  • Step 11

    Round 27: (k 2, k2tog)* repeat

  • Step 12

    Round 28: (k 1, k2tog)* repeat

  • Step 13

    Round 29: k2tog around

  • Step 14

    Round 30: k2tog around

  • Step 15

Cut yarn. Thread through stitches and tie tight.
    Weave in ends.

  • Step 16

For earflaps, with right size facing use red yarn to pick up 9 stitches in between the markers on both side.

Stockinette stitch for about 1/2" or desired length. For best results, slip the first stitch on every row. End on a RS row.

  • Step 17

    To decrease:

    Row 1: Slip 1 wyif, P2Tog, P5, P2Tog-TBL, K1 (9 sts)
    Row 2: Slip 1 wyif, SSK, K3, K2Tog, K1 (7 sts)
    Row 3: Slip 1 wyif, P2Tog, P2, P2Tog-TBL, K1 (5 sts)
    Row 4: Slip 1 wyif, SSK, K2 (4 sts)
    Row 5: Slip 1 wyif, P2Tog, K1 (3 sts)
    Row 6: K3Tog (1 st)

Cut yarn leaving long strand (for one of the dangling yarn bits at the end of the earflap) and pull through remaining stitch.

Cut another piece of yarn slightly more than double this length and attach to end of earflap; attach for fringe. Trim to desired length.

  • Step 18

Using all three colors, Make a pom pom and attach to top.
