A simple, stripy shawl, perfect for beginning shawl knitters.
Inspired by Indigo Landing, a location in Alexandria, VA right on the water, this simple striped shawl is an ideal first shawl pattern. You'll learn basic center top down construction and how to finish with an easy lace border, a great first stepping stone into shawl knitting!

Approximate Finished Size:
• 19” at highest point x 38” at widest point

Gauge:
• 11.5 sts and 22 rows over 4” in stockinette
pm: place marker
slm: slip marker
skp: slip 1 st knitwise, knit 1 st, pass slipped st over (1 st decreased)

    • With A, CO 2 sts, knit 10 rows in garter, turn work horizontal, pick up and knit 5 sts in garter edge, turn work and pick up and knit 2 original CO sts – 9 sts
    • Row 1 (WS): K2, pm, p2, pm, p1, pm, p2, pm, k2
    • Row 2 (RS): With B, k2, slm, yo, knit to marker, yo, slm, k1, slm, yo, knit to marker, yo, slm, k2 – 4 sts inc
    • Row 3: K2, slipping all markers, purl across to last 2 sts, k2
    • Repeat rows 2 and 3 switching from A to B every 2 rows until there are 137 sts
    • With B continue in pattern for 5 more rows – 149 sts
    • Next Row (WS): Purl across, inc 2 sts at beginning and end of row – 151 sts
    • With A, begin border
    • Row 1 (RS): k6, *skp, k2tog, k11* to last 10 sts, skp, k2tog, k6
    • Row 2, 4, 6 (WS): knit
    • Row 3 & 5: k1, *m1, k4, skp, k2tog, k4, m1, k1* to end
    • Row 7: k3, *[skp] twice, [k2tog] twice, k5* to last 11 sts, [skp] twice, [k2tog] twice, k3 • BO loosely knitwise (if you BO tightly, go up a few needle sizes)
    • Weave in all loose ends with tapestry needle
    • Block well
