Cut Out + Keep

I'm One Strange Kitty

Headphone customization - plush cat ears!!

My dad gave me this pair of headphones that wasn't really expensive, but worked really well. The only problem was that they were very plain and boring! So my first idea was to attach pipe cleaners that were shaped like kitty ears to them. They got bent very easily however, so I made some plush ones out of felt which were much better but kept on sliding away from each other. Then, I came up with this version, which has the two ears connected to form a sort of headband. They slid around much less and were a lot less trouble. I made the ears look more realistic as well and added tiger stripes. Note: My headphones have a flat plastic headband that's about one inch wide, so if your's aren't like that, it's okay, I'm sure you can modify the shape to fit your own. If you need help just ask me :)

Instructions

  1. Small 009 1325547968

Cut four pieces out of one color of felt into a sort of pentagon shape, but with two, more elongated sides. You can trace first like I did. I already sewed two pieces together in this picture (cuz I don't have a picture of them cut out xP)

  2. Small 007

Cut two triangle-shaped pieces of felt out of the second color of felt, and sew it to "good" side of two of the previous pieces. I hand-sewed here because the machine's sewing looked too harsh.

  3. Small 008

Take one of the pieces with the other colored felt, and one that doesn't have the other felt on it, and put their "good" sides together, lining them up. Sew along the two longer sides. I cut them a bit small so I had a very small seam allowance, which is usually ok with felt, but you might want to make them bigger to avoid this problem.

  4. Small 006

Do the same to the other two pieces. Then turn them inside out. After I did that, I found that they "poofed" too much, so I flattened them using my math textbook. So if you have the same problem just squish them with the heaviest book you've got xD

  5. Small 010

And this is how they came out! Now stuff them with whatever (not pellets or small things that can fall out) your half-way done!!!

  6. Using any leftover felt, cut out a rectangle that's as wide as you want the space between your ears to be, and long enough to wrap around the headband.

  7. Small 041

Wrap it around the headband with the opening at the back and whipstitch it closed. You'll want it to be pretty tight so you might have to pin it first. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures while I was sewing everything on, so a lot of these are of the final product.

  8. Small 043

Take one of the ears and position it so that it slightly overlaps the rectangle, and then fold the flaps tight over each other. Make sure the open side is at the back, pin, and whipstitch it shut. I suggest starting from the bottom, then sewing up and connecting it to the rectangle.

  9. Small 042

Do the same to the other ear.

  10. Small 044

This is how my headphones looked when I connected the ears to the rectangle. It's ok if it's a little sloppy, since it's not that noticeable.

  11. Small 046

Add some spots or stripes if you want, and you're DONE!!! Now go out and show the world your awesome headphones!! Or just wear them while dancing crazily in your room :D
