If a dart is angled on a pattern and not straight up and down and you stitch it with a plaid or stripe, the lines won't match up. It's easy to shift your dart so that the lines match up nicely.

Description

If a dart is angled on a pattern and not straight up and down and you stitch it with a plaid or stripe, the lines won't match up. It's easy to shift your dart so that the lines match up nicely.

Instructions

  1. Small 101200 2f2014 04 24 132702 bodice%2bwith%2bgrain

Here is an example of what an angled dart would look like on the pattern. You can see it isn't parallel to the grain line.

  2. Small 101200 2f2014 04 24 132728 dscf0630

The left side here is the dart sewn off grain. The right side is sewn when the dart is straight up and down. You can see the lines on the plaid match up on the right but not on the left.

  3. Small 101200 2f2014 04 24 132821 bodice%2bwith%2bapex

First, mark the apex. This is where your nipple is on you, usually about an inch above the dart.

  4. Small 101200 2f2014 04 24 132848 bodice%2boutline%2bwith%2bbox

Draw a box around the dart. Cut out the box.

  5. Small 101200 2f2014 04 24 132900 bodice%2bdart%2bmoved

Shift the box so the dart is straight up and down, with the tip of the dart still pointing towards the apex. That's it! Just tape it down and re-draw the waist lines to everything matches up.
