How To Refashion A Crop Top Into A Peplum Blouse

Refashion a cropped summer top into this season's closet staple--a peplum top.

About

Smarten up your act by creating an on-trend peplum blouse using only a cropped top and half a yard of fabric. With winter upon us, you can update a cropped summer top and refashion it to create a blouse that will glam up the most hectic of mornings.

You can match the colors as I did for this project or make the peplum a different color entirely (think graphic color blocking). The main thing is to make sure the peplum length flares gently over the hips--it shouldn't be any longer than six to eight inches, depending on your height. Too long and it's a tunic--too short and it's a tutu (and we wouldn't want to look like a lost ballerina, after all).

You Will Need (3 things)

  • Cropped Top
  • 1 yd Fabric
  • Sewing Machine

Steps (6 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

    WHAT YOU NEED:
--Cropped top (mine is from H/M)
    --1 yard fabric
    --Sewing machine

  2. 2

    Cut rectangle of fabric:
    width-- 4-6 inches wide
length-- waist measurement plus half that number.

Sew ends together and run gathering stitch along top.

I cut the rectangle of fabric on the bias rather than straight on the grain to create that slight fluttery effect without too much bunch.

  3. 3

Put narrow hem along bottom edge.

  4. 4

With right sides together, stitch top of peplum to bottom edge of top. Press.

  5. 5

    Done.

  6. 6

Pair with your favorite work day pieces.
