Breathe new life into an old favourite!

Everybody has that item in their wardrobe that used to be the love of their life, their go-to piece that always gave them a little more sass in their step and could be relied on to bring an outfit together. But that was then, and now the piece sits longer and longer, unworn and a bit ignored – like a friend you always say you’re going to catch up with but kinda never do! For me, my old Topshop denim jacket is that piece. When I first got it I wore it around the clock and it was pretty much my favourite jacket from April – September. So when I realised that the spark was gone, I decided to breathe some new life into the piece with some fun textile printing and sequin embellishment. I've always been obsessed with Madonna's iconic jacket from Desperately Seeking Susan, so I couldn't wait to make a statement jacket of my own to run around the city in and get into mischief! Here's how I did it...

So when I realised that the spark was gone, I decided to breathe some new life into the piece with some fun textile printing and sequin embellishment. Here's how I did it...

Tape off the edges around the area that you are going to print on. I chose the back panel since it was the largest area and gave me the most scope for design. Plus, it made me feel like I was creating a jacket for a super-girly biker gang!

Choose your design! It was a rainy day when I did mine so I selected a design featuring clouds, raindrops and lightning! The possibilities are endless - what will you choose? Draw your shapes onto the craft foam and cut them out. You might want to place them onto the jacket and play around with placement before moving onto the next step...

Using the glue stick, paste the foam shapes onto some small pieces of card - these are now going to be used as your stamps for the next part! Create a mixture of latex paint with a little fabric medium, this will make the print less 'stiff', which is ideal for clothes. The colours will depend on your design - I used grey for clouds, blue for raindrops and yellow for the lightning.

Cover the foam shape with the mixture (the small paint brush will come in handy here!) and carefully, but firmly, place the stamp onto the fabric. Once you lift it off, you should have a print of your design. Repeat until your dream design is complete! I found it easier to work from the top of the space to the bottom, to avoid smudging.

Once your design is complete, let it dry completely before giving it quick press with the iron. After that, it's time to stitch those sequins!! I decided to give my jacket shimmering raindrops and used iridescent sequins to make the vibrant blue print pop, but you can use any sequins you like. Next time, I'll be trying GOLD for the ultimate in Liberace glamour!

Et voila!! You now have yourself a statement jacket. All that's left to do now is wear it and fall in love with it all over again!
