Think your existing basket would be lovely in a different hue? Most baskets are easily re-stainable! If the basket has a glossy protective finish to it, you will want to start by giving it a sanding...otherwise choose the gel stain of choice and get started! This project takes 20 minutes to complete, but 48 hours of drying time.

Instructions

  1. Small 102112 2f2014 05 26 220955 materials

You will need gel stain, a rag you can throw away, and an old (cheap) paintbrush. Oh, and you will also need some disposable gloves!

  2. Small 102112 2f2014 05 26 221100 step1

Apply the gel stain with the paintbrush, blotting to get into the overlapping fibers. It is ok to leave little clumps of gel stain soaking into the fibers.

  3. Small 102112 2f2014 05 26 221333 wipe%2boff

Go back over the area with a cloth and work the stain into the fibers. You can also "wipe off" any excess stain and get it tot he desired hue. Work your way around the entire basket, and do the inside as well. Allow it to dry 48 hours before use.
