I was given a lovely collage by a friend. It is a true piece of folk art, made from remnants of suiting fabric and minimal stitching. In this mini workshop, I am using scraps that I have around the studio to make this piece. It’s a great project to give as a gift for a special occasion. Making a Scrap Collage

Instructions

  1. Small 2018 11 02 131558 akhousedrawing

Begin by drawing your house (or other feature) on paper as a basic outline drawing, with no major details, making clear lines that you will be able to cut out.

  2. Small 2018 11 02 131708 akhousedrawingonbackground

Ensure that it fits well inside your background fabric.

  3. Cut out the pieces of the house using paper scissors and pin to pieces of fabric, embroidery and labels.

  4. Using fabric scissors cut out the pieces of the house.

  5. Arrange the pieces of the house on the background, and then pin or glue with a light coating of glue stick.

  6. Small 2018 11 02 131729 akhousecollageglued

Tack the house pieces onto the background. Use a mixture of machine and hand stitching – this will make your piece much more interesting.

  7. Small 2018 11 02 131719 akhouse%2bcollage

When you have completed the house, you can decide what you want to do with the background – whether you want to include foliage, a fence or a path, for example.

  8. Now you are ready to embellish your piece using ribbon, buttons and some embroidery. My piece used a mixture of stitches, including backstitch, French knots and blanket stitch.
