My mom has a necklace she got years ago with a heart shaped pendant filled with pure gold flakes floating in some sort of liquid. It is gorgeous and I have never seen another like it! Then a couple months ago Zoya came out with a nail polish with flakes of 18K gold floating in a clear base and I set out to recreate that look and I think this comes close!

Description

My mom has a necklace she got years ago with a heart shaped pendant filled with pure gold flakes floating in some sort of liquid. It is gorgeous and I have never seen another like it! Then a couple months ago Zoya came out with a nail polish with flakes of 18K gold floating in a clear base and I set out to recreate that look and I think this comes close!

Instructions

Gather resin supplies: +Easy Cast Clear Resin (or your fave brand) +Resin Mold Release +Resin Mold +Paper Cup +Plastic Spoon

  2. Small img 1725

Gather jewelry supplies: +Gold Flakes (about $2.50 on ebay) +E-6000 +Head pin or toothpick +Jewelry Pliers/ Reg Pliers For Pin: +Pin Back For Keychain: +Jewelry Bail +Keychain Base +Split Ring For Pendant: +Jewelry Bail +Necklace Chain +Split Ring

  3. Small img 1731

Pour a level spoonful of resin (bottle with white ink) into the paper cup.

  4. Small img 1732

Pour a level spoonful of hardener (bottle with black ink) into the paper cup. Mix slowly (to prevent air bubbles) for about 1 minute.

  5. Small img 1733

Spray the mold with a light spritz of the mold release.

  6. Small img 1734

Carefully pour resin into selected shape of mold being careful not to overflow the cavity. This amount of resin mixture will fill 2-3 cavities.

  7. Small img 1729

Select and separate the gold flakes you plan use. They have a tendency to stick together.

  8. Small img 1737

Using the head pin or toothpick push the flakes into the resin. You can add as few or as many flakes as you like. Press them in at a variety of depths throughout the cavity. Let set for 24 hours.

  9. Small img 1809

After 24 hours, check to see if the resin has hardened. If the resin has not yet hardened let set for a few more hours. If hard, apply firm and steady pressure to the back of the mold. If the piece doesn't come out of the mold easily put it into the freezer for a couple of minutes and try again.

  10. Small img 1810

Once the shape has been removed from the mold it is time to choose whether you will be making it into a pin, a keychain, or a pendant.

  11. Small img 1812

For a pin: Apply a small dab of E-6000 to the pin back.

  12. Small img 1815

Center the pin back and press onto the back of the resin piece. Let dry, face down for 12-24 hours.

  13. Small img 1813

If you are making a keychain or pendant: Apply a small dab of E-6000 onto a bail.

  14. Small img 1814

Center the bail on the top, back of the piece of resin. Press onto the back of the piece and let dry face down for 12-24 hours.

  15. Small img 1817

Once the glue has dried we can move onto attaching the keychain or necklace chain. Start by using the pliers to open the split ring.

  16. Small img 1818

Once open, slide the loop of the bail onto the split ring.

  17. Small img 1819

Slide the loop of the keychain onto the split ring OR insert the necklace chain into the split ring. Close the split ring using the pliers.
