We received a surprising number of submissions for patterns inspired by the urban phenomenon of shoes hung over telephone lines. With interpretations both literal and fanciful, here are a few of our favorites. KnitGirl has designed a knitted sculpture of a pair of sneakers, which, at first glance, resemble the shoes upon which they are based. They can incorporate the graffiti artist’s name or initial as a textual element. The sole can also be knit separately as a flat piece, which can be used as a stapled tag. The large dot on the side of each shoe and the letters on the soles are worked using the intarsia method of color work. When working in this way, different sections of each row are worked with different colors. use a separate length of yarn for each area of color When beginning with a new color, tie the strand of the new color in a slip knot around the strand of the old color. Slide the knot up close to the needle, then proceed with the new color. When switching from one color to the next within each row, drop the color you have been knitting with and bring the yarn for the next color up under the yarn of the previous color before you continue knitting. This will twist the two yarns around each other. It is very important to do this; if you do not wrap the yarns in this way, the areas of color will not be joined, and you will have holes in your work.

Finishing Insert cardboard soles; be sure that cardboard soles are aligned correctly with contours of knitted soles. For each shoe, pin side edges of tongue to shaped edges of upper, matching top edges. Sew in place. Stuff shoes as desired. Shoes shown were stuffed with pinecones (to give volume) and a few chestnuts (to provide weight); consider using similar materials found in your neighbor- hood. Be sure the shoes are not too heavy, or they will lose their shape. Sew tops of shoes closed, securing ends of cord in place at back of each shoe. using CC2, work two crochet chains, each approx. 30 in/76 cm long. Sew chains into shoes to simulate laces.
