These mittens, although very basic looking, are a fun twist on traditional construction as they are worked from the fingertips down using the magic loop method.

Description

I chose to knit them in fingering weight handspun so I would have a nice pair of mittens for the fall that were cozy enough to combat the frosts but not too warm to wear while out for my daily run.

Instructions

  1. Fingers CO 12 sts each needle, using Judy's Magic Cast On. (24 sts total) Knit 1 round even. Inc rnd: * K1, M1L, knit to last st, M1R, K1 *Repeat for the second needle. Repeat last two rounds 5 times more for a total of 48 sts. Knit even for 5.5” or the length of your hand from the tips of your fingers down to the webbing between your thumb and index finger.

  2. Thumb Gusset Using scrap yarn, chain 18 sts or 20 sts. Knit across first needle (24 sts) and pick up 16 sts along back of crochet chain, knit to end of the round. (64 sts) Divide sts so there are an even number across your needles. Knit 3 rounds even Dec rnd: Knit to last 3 sts of needle 1, SSK, K2, K2tog, knit to end of round. 2 sts decreased (62 sts) Knit 1 round even. Repeat the last two rounds 7 times more, 48 sts remaining. Knit even for 5 rounds or until the mitten reaches your wrist when tried on. K2, P1 ribbing for 2” or desired length of cuff.

  3. Thumb Pickup and knit 1 st on the inside of the thumb. Pickup and knit 16 sts from waste yarn, Pick up and knit 1 more st on the inside of the thumb. (18 sts) Knit 1 round. Next round: K1 st, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts of rnd, SSK, k1 (16 sts) Knit even for 2 more inches (or the length of your thumb). K2tog around (8 sts) Break yarn and thread through remaining sts. Tighten and sew in ends. Repeat for second mitten.
