I decided to grow a patch of grass in a large container for my hamster. I got this idea because I wanted my hamster to be able to play in the grass even if the weather was bad. By growing my own grass I can be sure my little girl is safe from pesticides, bigger animals and getting lost. Now she can eat, play, and dig in the grass to her little heart's content! This project is really fast and really easy. Also, I bought everything I needed at the dollar store for 3$!

Instructions

  1. Get a large container that's a couple inches deep and that has a large surface area. I bought a large tupperware container at the dollar store for 2$. It comes with a cover which will be useful for condensation. By covering it and putting it in the sun water will build up inside and it wont dry out as fast. The cover, however, is completely optional.

  2. Small 101 1609 1303584302

Cover the bottom of your container with gravel/pebbles/sand to help with drainage. You only need about an inch. I chose to use gravel because I had some sitting around in the backyard. School yard pebbles would work nicely as well. I know that small bags of gravel can be found at the dollar store, so look around and you might be surprised! Because I'm flaky when it comes to taking pictures for projects I filled my container with gravel and soil befor taking pictures. I filled my container with gravel up to my finger.

  3. Small 101 1613 1303584540

Add your soil. Make sure your layer of soil is a couple inches deep so that the grass will have enough room to grow! I bought two small bags of potting soil at the dollar store for only 50 cents each. You can use any ground you like because grass will grow anywhere. You can use a shovel of ground from your backyard if you like.

  4. Small 101 1611 1303585202

Sprinkle a good amount of grass seeds on your soil and spray it with water. My grass seed was free because I had a bag laying around from last year. It doesn't matter what kind of seeds you use as long as you follow the steps on the bag.

  5. Small 101 1612 1303584886

This next step is optional but it helps your ground not to dry out. Cover your ground and seeds with a layer of coffee filters and spray them with water. The filters will hold in moisture.

Put the cover on your container and give it some sun.

  7. Now all you have to do is wait a couple of days until the grass starts to sprout then you can remove the filters. Remember to keep the ground nice and moist but not soggy for healthy grass!
