Many of the bags I make are made from thrifted blue jeans. I usually take the back pockets off, remove the zipper (zippers are expensive), and throw the rest out. What a waste...right!? After a little browsing around the good ol' net, I found a few of these half denim half maxi skirts. I love maxi skirts they're chic, comfy, and most of all modest. I also love denim. So, this project was a lot of fun. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do. Let's get started!!!! BTW...You can watch the how-to video for this project at http://www.womantoanother.com

Instructions

  1. Before you start... I don't have a serger so I usually zigzag stitch, french seam, or flat fell seam my raw edges. This how-to just gives you the basics for putting the skirt together. Feel free to finish the raw edges of your skirt in any way you're comfy with (^_^)

  2. Small cutting the legs off

Cut the legs off of the jeans just below the zipper. If there are large pockets on the back, be sure to leave a bit of a seam allowance. your maxi should start about 1/2" below the pockets.

  3. Try the denim on and measure the length of the skirt from the bottom of the denim down to where you want your skirt to stop. Divide this number by 3. Add 10". Also, add 1/2" for a seam allowance and 1 inch for the hem We'll call this measurement X

  4. Small 100 6414

Lay the denim flat and measure it's width. Double this measurement and add a seam allowance This will be measurement "Y"

  5. Small measurements

Cut 2 pieces with each of the following measurements Top Piece- Measurement X by Measurement Y Middle Piece - Measurement X by Measurement Y + 10" Bottom Piece- Measurement X by Measurement Y + 20"

  6. Small 100 6421

Let's create the tiered maxi skirt... - Sew two rows of wide stitches at the top of the top piece. Gather it until it's 1" larger than the denim denim. The first row of stitches should be 1/8" from the edge of the fabric. The second row should be 1/4" inches from the edge of the fabric.

  7. Small skirt tiers

Repeat this process with the bottom two pieces. When gathering the middle tier, gather it until it's equal to the BOTTOM of the top tier. Gather the bottom tier until it's equal to the BOTTOM of the middle tier. Your tiers should look similar to the illustration at the left.

  8. Small 100 6420

Place the two top pieces right sides together and sew the short sides forming a tube. Repeat this process with the two middle pieces and the two bottom pieces. You should have three tubes.

  9. Let's put it all together... -Place the top tier INSIDE the middle tier with the right sides together. Line the side seams up. Pin and sew. Now, place this tube INSIDE the bottom tier, line the side seams up, pin and sew.

  10. Small 100 6427

Place your denim inside your maxi with the right side together. Line your side seams up. Pin and sew. Hem the bottom.

  11. You may want to press the whole thing once more to make the seams look neat. You're all done!!! If you have any question feel free to message me and I'll get back to you ASAP. Don't forget to post your version below.

  12. Why are you still reading this? Go make that skirt (^_^)
