Description

This project is a great way of using up any scraps of fabric you just can't bear to throw out! (Pictures a bit small? Click to enlarge)

Instructions

  1. Small 20251

Measure how long your hairband needs to be (ear to ear over the top of the head) and decide the width you want it to be, but bear in mind the thinner it is, the more fiddly it is to turn inside-out later on. Cut your 3 pieces of fabric to your measurements, allowing a bit extra for seam allowance.

  2. Small 20252

Lay your 3 pieces of fabric on top of each other matching all edges. Then fold in half lengthways and iron. This will give you a nice crease and show you where the middle of the hairband is.

  3. Small 20253

Place your 2 nice pieces of fabric right sides together and lay on top of the plain cotton (if using) Sandwich your elastic in between the 2 nice pieces of fabric and pin to the crease mark all along its length. Pinning it now will stop it wriggling its way into one of your seams which is really annoying! Your elastic should be shorter than your hairband and you only need to pin it to one end at the moment. This photo shows the elastic pinned in place before being sandwiched by the other piece of fabric.

  4. Small 20254

This is what it looks like with all layers pinned together and the elastic sandwiched and pinned in place.

  5. Small 20255

Overlock or stitch the 2 long sides and the end with the elastic - leave the other end unstitched.

  6. Small 20256

Turn inside-out (minding the pins that are holding the elastic in place) and using a knitting needle / pencil / end of scissors push the corners out.

  7. Small 20257

Press all edges, fold the open end inwards neatly and pin the elastic into place.

  8. Small 20258

Top stitch all edges and do a few reinforcing stitches to hold the elastic securely in place. And now you've made a reversible hairband!
