Description

I've been unhappy for a while now with the white stretch of wall above my bed. So I thought: what's one of the nicest things in this world? Lying under a tree!

Instructions

Decide on your design. You can choose anything here, work from a photo or a file. Just remember to keep it relatively simple- you are going to have to paint it! I copy-and-shopped from various drawings I found on Google until I got a tree I liked. Try and integrate the wall space that you are going to put this on. My tree is in a corner, so I chose a straight trunk that would go in the middle because I wouldn't be able to get in there and do any detailed painting.

Get a hardcopy of your design. If you have a printer, great! If you don't, put a piece of paper over your monitor/laptop and trace.

Add a grid! Unless you are extremely talented that way, you're going to want to add a grid to your design to make it easier to duplicate on the wall. Then, also grid your wall. This will take a bit of planning and coordinating until you know what size exactly you want your painting and, consequently, the grid to be. I marked my wall with little x's spaced 20cm (about 8 inches) apart which seemed to work quite well.

Start drawing! Self-explanatory, really: look at the individual grid-sections of your template and copy them onto the wall. For the smaller details (the birds and writing), I got an actual size hard-copy template and traced it onto the wall.

Gather your painting utensils! Be careful to cover the floor and any other stuff you want to protect. I used ordinary paint I had left from painting the kitchen.

Start painting! This is going to take a while. I recommend putting on some good music or an audio book to help with this step. I had the help of the Beatles Anthology on DVD which was very supportive. I did this in two sessions, at first I did the bigger parts: the trunk and bigger branches, let dry, and then the details. What you want to do in any case though is work from the top down and left to right (if you're a righty like me and vice-versa) so as not to smear anything which would be a shame!

And now marvel at your pretty tree!

Winter or not, I don't care. I'm lying under my tree, listening to the bees humming and the birds chirping. :) Hope you guys frind this inspiring. Looking forward to your versions!
