Green T Shirt Die

a green way to make dye for fabrics

About

I really like dying things. And I got to thinking, there has got to be a greener way to do this. So I was doing laundry with my sister. I was doing the socks, and my brothers socks were green from mowing the lawns. And I thought, why not make dye's using things that stain!! It seems so simple I cannot believe that I did not think of it before.

You Will Need (4 things)

  • 1 White T Shirt
  • 1 cup fresh Grass
  • 1 Blender
  • 1 Mortar & Pestle

Steps (10 steps, 5 minutes)

  1. 1

    Next, pick some grass.

  2. 2

    First, acquire a shirt.

  3. 3

Then I grinded the grass in our Magic Bullet. I am sure that any blender will do the job, but Magic Bullets are faster. :P

  4. 4

This is how the grass should look like.

  5. 5

Then use a mortar and pestle to grind the grass even more. Add some water to make it a little more liquid-y. But only add a bit, otherwise it'll be only water!

  6. 6

Next, grab a bit of the grass and draw or write what you want your t-shirt to say.

  7. 7

See, you can see bits of the grass around the letters. It is such a thick dye, eh? I think it looks MARVELOUS!

  8. 8

Helpful hint; put cardboard or plastic in between the layers of the shirt, otherwise it'll end up with backwards words on the back! I kind of like the look though, and it kind of has a deeper meaning like, love shines through.

  9. 9

Also, you might want to put something on your work surface too, 'cause the dye goes through BOTH layers! It wiped off easily, so you may not need to worry about it.

I hung the shirt over a chair, putting it on the chair like a shirt to dry. After, I plan to treat it like a tie-dyed shirt, only washing it by hand in cold water and then hanging it up to dry.
I am also planning to find good ways to do other colors, so that I can do a rainbow because they are beautiful.
