Mario mushroom glows in the dark

I made this for my brothers 21st, still very much a mario fan he was really chuffed and even more so when I told him it would glow in the dark! I got the inspiration after I had zoomed in on an image and noticing the pixels it reminded me of the original Mario games. In the images above you will see I drew the design on graph paper first, then coloured it in to give me an idea of which coloured thread went where!

Description

I made this for my brothers 21st, still very much a mario fan he was really chuffed and even more so when I told him it would glow in the dark! I got the inspiration after I had zoomed in on an image and noticing the pixels it reminded me of the original Mario games. In the images above you will see I drew the design on graph paper first, then coloured it in to give me an idea of which coloured thread went where!

Instructions

  1. Small 12august12 298

So I started with the black crosses, I also stiched the square around the mushroom as a guide (because I kept losing count!)

  2. Small zoom21up

I tried zooming in to give you a better idea. As you can see all of the black blocks are only 2 squares in either width or depth, its just the length that varies.

  3. Small 12august12 310

Once I had finished cross stitching the black I did the green then the white and that was the mushroom completed. (see above image for closer detail) The green thread is DMC neon green and is from the fluorescent range, the white thread is the one that will glow in the dark also from DMC.

  4. The last image "21up" is what I wanted to add for my brother as it was his birthday. After backstitching everything, I cut out the finished "mushroom and 21up" backed them onto some thin red foam using double sided tape and framed it as you can see above. I think the finished result works really well together, the chunky brightness of the red frame giving it that retro feeling, especailly when it glows in the dark!!
