These cookies are a family recipe from my grandmother. She made them for Christmas for years and they are a family favorite. These are soft and cake-like cookies. Top them with any icing and they are a perfect treat all year round!

You Will Need (11 things)

  • 1 cup Butter
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 cup Dark Molasses
  • 2 tbsp Vinegar
  • 5 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 ½ tsp Baking Soda
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Ground Ginger
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Ground Cloves

Steps (7 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

    Cream together butter and sugar.

  2. 2

Beat in egg, molasses and vinegar.

  3. 3

    Blend in sifted dry ingredients.

  4. 4

Chill 2-3 hours (this is important– the dough is very easy to roll after chilling)

  5. 5

Roll 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch thick on a floured counter or board and cut into shapes.

  6. 6

    Place on greased cookie sheets.
Bake at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes. Check often- take out when cookies have risen and are easily removed from sheet.

  7. 7

Frost as desired. I used Royal Icing. If you want instructions and techniques for Royal Icing, visit my website: www.easybaked.net.
