Games Day Project Pelt Update

The life of a pelt

This is a full page of images of my pelt that my costume will be wearing to Games Day :). I named him percy as describing it to people got complicated by saying wolf this wolf that lol. So from the first image you can see the very basic shape of the head sculpted from a polystrene block I bought from http://www.4dmodelshop.com, it was very reasonably priced for the size it was coming in around £5 per block, I bought four because I needed to sculpt the paws and other bits too. Throughout the images are the process of basic shape right through to furring the head and then airbrushing more tones to make it look slightly more realistic. I finished with fishing line cut short for whiskers-and right at the very end is me wearing him lol. I will be posting a similar document with how my beastman was created as well as the armour etc.

Instructions

  1. Small space wolf plans by heavenlyodyssey d32kjm3 1 1312040692

Here is where it all began. Originally I was going to go as either and Inquisitor, Space Wolf rune priestess or something to do with chaos. However my funds couldnt stretch that far lol, so staying with the chaos idea I opted to go as a beastman warlord. This picture is just a process of how I was going to make the wolf head and how to fur it etc. I'm a visual learner so by doing things like this it helps me with the actual process :).

  2. Small wolf 1 by heavenlyodyssey d3bsoy0 1 1312040868

At this point I had researched wolf heads as they greatly differ in shape to domesticated dogs. I studied how the fur lays directionally, tones and lengths etc. I had about 5 different pictures that I looked to when carving as it helped me to get the right shape. The size however has been made bigger as stated in a previous entry-once furred the wolf head should look about the right size compared with the large beastman. The ripples of clay are the lips that are snarling, I paid particular attention to the way the muscles change when snarling as they make the whole head look different. Obvious I know lol but it helps in later process. Once you know how an animal moves and acts it'll be far easier to replicate rather than jumping in at the deep end!

  3. Small wolf 12 by heavenlyodyssey d3bsrfa 1 1312041211

I know I skipped a step so appologies-it was taking forever to upload and being lazy I opted to make a new step rather than wait lol. Right so after waiting everything to dry, you can see that I installed the follow me style resin eyes and sculpted an eyelid around them. If you're interested in follow me eyes for plushies I suggest heading to FurAffinity.org, it has very useful guides there :). After the eyes were put in I went about sculpting the lower jaw and made the teeth out of a hardy clay called sculpey. I dipped the white sculpey in a cream coloured rubber latex to give them abit of ware and age and after drying, glued them in. The actual lips are just hand sewn strips of an old black tshirt painted over with black for depth of colour.

Here we are at the furring stage, I had carefully selected fur that closely mimiced a timber wolfs from ebay and began to glue it on with a standard hot glue gun. At this point I would like to say don't be like me and go gong ho-go over the basic head shape with duct tape and cut it off. From the pieces you can make a pattern that will fit the head so much neater than I did. I only found out about duct tape dummy patterns when doing my beastman lol. Other than that I had painted the nose with black coloured rubber latex and make a clay tongue that I glued into place.

  5. Small airbrush wolf 2 by heavenlyodyssey d3cnqkn 1 1312041724

I trimmed the fur with an electric shaver once it was all glued securely on and later airbrushed and drybrushed the muzzle. Drybrushing is different from airbrushing, a useful site to learn more is Deviant Art or the previously mentions Fur Affinity. They will go into far more detail about how they went about doing it. The great thing is that if you do it a certain way the acrylic dyes the fur perminantly so even if you washed it with a sponge the colour would remain intact. Very useful for creating actual fursuits and colouring them cheaply.

  6. Small grr my cable by heavenlyodyssey d3lm0wm 1 1312042008

Here you can see the muzzle has been drybrushed and also gone over with raw umber. I prefer follow me style resin eyes as if like me you can't afford taxidermy-they bring a sense of life to otherwise dull eyes. I used yellow ochre to paint my wolf eyes to give a real depth of intense colour-quite a stare huh? :). You can also see that at this point I had started to fur the paw I carved out of foam.

Alrighty! At this point percy was now fully complete :). So here I am celebrating by wearing him around the house glad he was finally finished lol.
