I first saw this project in Generation T's "108 Ways to Tranfsorm a T-Shirt" by Megan Nicolay. It was originally made from t-shirts but I did it a little differently, using regular fabric bought from a store. I found this made the bag sturdier and generally nicer looking. One of my favorite bags by far :) **If at any point my directions are confusing or my pictures are unclear, please post a comment or message me and I'll be happy to explain them better.

Description

I first saw this project in Generation T's "108 Ways to Tranfsorm a T-Shirt" by Megan Nicolay. It was originally made from t-shirts but I did it a little differently, using regular fabric bought from a store. I found this made the bag sturdier and generally nicer looking. One of my favorite bags by far :) **If at any point my directions are confusing or my pictures are unclear, please post a comment or message me and I'll be happy to explain them better.

Instructions

  1. Small 1 1313458347

First, gather your materials. I used a white fabric and a blue multi-colored paisley print fabric.

  2. Small 2 1313458339

Take one of your fabrics and flip it to the wrong side. Fold it in half. Using your ruler, make a triangle. The base should be 9" wide. The adjacent side should be 25" tall. The side across from the adjacent side should be 23". Pin both layers of the fabric together and cut out the triangle.

  3. Small 3 1313458680

Repeat step 2 for the other piece of fabric.

  4. Small 4 1313459308

Now you should have 4 triangles, 2 of each color. Place 2 triangles of the same color, right sides facing in and pin along the 25" edge. Sew along this edge only! Repeat for the other 2 triangles.

  5. Small 5 1313466997

The fabric I used was fraying at the edges so I made a hem of about a quater inch once the two triangles had been sewn together. If you're using t-shirt material this isn't really necessary but hems sometimes make the edges look cleaner.

  6. Small 8 1313464959

Now you should have two big triangles. Insert the tips of one pair of triangles between the layers of the other, so that the 9" sides overlap. Pin and sew along this bottom, 9" edge. NOTE: The triangles that you insert will be the ones visible on the outside of the bag, so arrange them as you like.

  7. Small 9 1313465509

This is probably the trickiest part of this whole project. If you're sewing by hand, it't not so bad but using a machine can be a little difficult. Turn the bag inside out and pin the overlapping edges of the fabric together as shown. Sew them together being very careful to do only 2 layers at a time, otherwise you'll end up sewing your bag closed! Repeat for the other side of the bag.

  8. Small 10 1313466406

Tie the points at the top in a double knot. Voila! Go strut your new bag and make your friends jealous.
