Fly Trap

Homemade and Effective Control For Pesky Flies

About

Fly problem ? Have animals ? Live in Australia where you can't escape them or anywhere else on the planet for that matter ? Don't like to continuously spray bug or fly spray around. Hang these outside to kill the flies without poison. These will not attract Bees or other insects.

I usually use Vegemite for my traps but Fish, Red Meat, Chicken Meat, or Dog Poop works to attract the flies too.

You Will Need (7 things)

  • Box Cutter
  • Plastic Bottle
  • Awl
  • Pliers
  • Wire
  • ½ cup Water
  • 2 tbsp Vegemite

Steps (8 steps, 5 minutes)

  1. 1

Start by gathering everything. I used an empty 1.25 litre plastic cool drink bottle, garden wire, sharp Awl, pliers to cut the wire, and my trusty very sharp box cutter.

  2. 2

Discard the screw top. Cut the first quarter of the bottle off (the spout part).

  3. 3

Put the cut part down in the bottom part so that the spout is facing inwards, aligning the cut parts up.

  4. 4

With a sharp Awl, poke two holes opposite each other about 1cm down from the edge.

  5. 5

    Cut approximately 30cm of wire.

  6. 6

Thread the wire threw the holes and twist each end so that they are secure.

  7. 7

Congratulations, you've made your fly trap !

You can use anything that will spoil and really smell to attracted the flies.
Put 2 Tablespoons of Vegemite in the trap and half cut of water, this is to attract the flies, they fly in the spout part and can't get back out so then they drown in the wonderful smelling concoction.

You can use a few little uncooked pieces of meat or fat from dinner to put it in the bottle with the half cut of water. This will spoil and start to smell so you don't want this in the direct air flow coming into your home.
