A simple and pretty mix of traditional and modern quilling techniques

Bold anemone flowers and pale pink rosebuds join deep green vines for a romantic paper heart to frame or mount on a greeting card.

Instructions

  • How to make a paper flower. Flowers And Vines Heart - Step 1
    Step 1

Sketch or trace a simple heart in the size that you want your final project to be. I recommend a heart that is about 4 inches across.

Place the heart under a sheet of waxed paper on your corkboard and pin the corners to keep it in place.

    Step 2

Glue two strips of leaf green quilling paper together to make a double-thick strip.

Mold the double-thick strip around the edge of the heart, with small dots of glue underneath to keep the paper in place.

Use pins to help the strip stay until the glue dries.

After your edging is complete, start adding the vines.

The vines are created from basic scrolls.

The trick is to place them in random order and to make sure they’re not in the same through the entire design.

Tuck in some curved strips as well for a little variation.

    Next, the flowers!

    I made two different kinds.

For the first, tear strips of white quilling paper in varying lengths, from about 2 1/2 inches to 6 inches.

Instead of rolling the strip around your quilling tool, use a toothpick to make the center hole slightly larger.

Then, fill in the center with a tight coil from a charcoal gray strip.

The result is a bold, graphic anemone bloom.

    Step 6

For the pink flowers, roll strips of pale pink around my needle tool to make a coil, I glued the end.

Then, using your tool, push on one side of the coil gently.

I think they sort of look like ruffle-edged rosebuds!

    Step 7

Layer the flowers along one side of the heart and move them as needed, until you’re happy with the placement.

Also, add a few white and pink tight coils at either end of the spray to add a more realistic effect of blooming flowers.

Then apply glue as needed to secure them in place.
