A cute and cool dress that is perfect for summer!

I made this dress from scratch. The idea for making it was that I wanted it to be like my other project "Floral Pants Into Cutout Circle Skirt Dress". However, with that dress I had stretchy fabric. For this one, I had non-stretchy cotton. Therefore, I had to modify it a bit and add some darts. Description

Instructions

  1. A VIDEO TUTORIAL that showcases all the diagrams shown below, plus the body measurements I am referring to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1AkZdRGtDY

  2. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174143 dsc08906

Start off with as many yards of fabric as you need. I am petite, so I used 2 yards. However, I should have gotten 2.5 yards. Therefore, you should definitely get atleast 3-4 yards of fabric.

  3. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 175932 step%2b1

Cut out the different pieces of fabric from the main fabric.

  4. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174308 circle%2bskirt%2bstep%2b2

Making a circle skirt is pretty basic, if you need more direction, there are plenty of other tutorials.

If you don't know which measurements I am talking about, please ask. Otherwise, I will be posting a video shortly on how to measure these measurements.

  6. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174426 straps

    How to make the straps

  7. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174433 straps%2b2

How to finish the edges of the straps.

  8. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174512 straps%2b3

    How to create the straps.

  9. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174534 back%2b1

    How to hem the back.

  10. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174547 back%2b2

Add elastic and secure the ends.

  11. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174604 back%2b2%2b %2bcopy

Cut the back in half, this will help for inserting the zipper.

  12. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174622 pleats%2bfront

How to create the pleats on the front. A familiarity with pleating will DEFINITELY HELP. Otherwise, you might not want to attempt this.

  13. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174834 pleats%2bfront%2b %2bcopy

    How to fold the pleats.

  14. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174848 front%2b1

How to finish the edges of the front piece.

  15. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 175436 dsc09218

These are the style of pleats I'm referring to.

  16. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 180008 connection%2bof%2bfront%2band%2bback

How to attach the front and back pieces (at the sides and with the straps.) I recommend doing a french seam with the side seams unless you have lining fabric. I did not use lining fabric.

  17. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 174944 assembling

Hem the bottom of the top and the top of the bottom, you could attach them and then fold the edge and sew, but at the time the former seemed easier to me.

  18. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 175031 attachingn%2b2

    Attach the top and bottom.

  19. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 175057 zipper%2bseam

Sew a seam and sew a zipper into the dress. Don't forget to hem the bottom of the dress.

  20. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 175119 final%2bproduct

And this is what the finished product should look like! If you have any questions please ask.

  21. Small 109977 2f2015 07 18 175238 dsc09220

I DID add two darts on the lower side of the front bodice piece. This is because I have a large bust and the fabric did not curve well around it.
