Ever felt that a tool is a little expensive don't feel you know whether should buy it or not. All you need is a little try. Here is a simple and cheap alternative to making a flocking applicator, it may be all you need if you only make small items! See link to pages that can be printed out and used. https://www.facebook.com/145534025467989/photos/?tab=album&album_id=805102002844518

Instructions

  1. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 150402 picture1

You will need an electric fly swat like this.

  2. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 150505 picture1

And wire, a sieve, crocodile clips, polymorph or thick tape.

  3. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 150630 picture1

And some pliers, screwdrivers, batteries, tweezers, scissors and tape.

  4. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 150729 picture1

Take the fly swat apart by removing the screws in the handle.

  5. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 150812 picture1

Keep hold of the screws as you will need them.

  6. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 151806 picture1

The button will be loose, so put that in a safe place too.

  7. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 151720 picture1

Undo the screw that had been revealed by the open handle.

  8. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 151101 picture2

Split open the racket part of the fly swat.

  9. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 151929 picture1

The live (red +) goes to the inside mesh and the other (green -) goes to the outside bars.

  10. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 151244 picture1

You only need to do this if your wires are not coloured

  11. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152019 picture1

You can dispose of the frame now.

  12. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152050 picture1

Break the handle off the sieve.

  13. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 151301 4

Then cut the length of the sieve to the desired length.

  14. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152203 picture1

Short enough to not interfere with the circuit board.

  15. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152209 2

Long enough to hold in place.

  16. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152511 picture1

I bend mine a little to clip in place.

  17. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152220 4

You will now need to attach the crocodile clip.

  18. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152518 2

Negative (green -) to crocodile clip, remove one.

  19. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152737 picture1

When attaching the clip remember to feed the wire through the cover first.

  20. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152744 2

Ensure the wire has good contact with the clip.

  21. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152750 3

Positive (red +) goes to the sieve.

  22. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 152756 4

    Tape this in place.

  23. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153014 picture1

Then make sure all the pieces fit into the handle.

  24. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153055 2

It is thinner than the fly swat so will need some padding to keep it in place.

  25. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153117 3

I use polymorph but you could use card, duct tape, etc

  26. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153204 4

Make sure you put the screws in place while it sets.

  27. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153358 picture1

Wait for the polymorph to set.

  28. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153416 2

When the polymorph has set all you need to do now is put in the batteries.

  29. Flock

  30. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153506 4

pva or wood glue, a brush and items to be flocked

  31. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153526 5

When flocking paint on some glue in a nice thin layer. You can also use nail varnish, if it is the same colour as the flock it will make a deeper richer colour, be careful your nail varnish doesn't dry before you get to flock the work.

  32. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153817 picture1

Attach the crocodile clip to the piece.

  33. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153829 2

Fill the sieve with enough flock for the area you wish to cover.

  34. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153902 3

Press the button on the side of the applicator.

  35. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153916 4

Sieve the flock onto the work, place the seive very close to the surface you are flocking, but not touching.

  36. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 153958 5

To flock a material that is not metal you will need a pin or piece of wire.

  37. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 154124 picture1

Put the pin or wire in the glue and attach the crocodile clip to it.

  38. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 154229 2

When you have finished wait for the glue to dry.

  39. Small 115863 2f2017 02 18 154243 3

Note: Flocking material does not mix too well.
