I made two sticks and they work really great! They are about 12cm long. I took two colours of fimo and rolled them out long, then rolled them together :) The leather hair thingy, was a leather cuff. I cut off the buckle and made a hole either side for the stick to go through. It also is great for holding your hair up :D

Tie your hair up in a high pony tail
Starting near your head, twist the pony tail around to the tip of the hair.
Wrap the twisted hair around the hair bobble in a bun. Either stick the end of the hair under the bobble or pin it to your head.
Stick the sticks through the bun from opposite sides to each other. They should be pretty secure :)
