Festoon Mittens

Gradient Knits

https://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/festoon-mittens • Posted by Search Press

Begun with a stretchy cast-on and constructed from the bottom up with a ribbed cuff worked in the round, these Fair Isle mittens are designed in a traditional Scandinavian style. The mittens feature two different patterns: a diamond motif on the palm side that then transforms into oral garlands anked by heraldic eagles on the top side. A darker, solid-coloured background showcases the lighter gradient foreground, showing off the individual stitches. Unlike a traditional ombré-style gradient, this gradient set comes in a pre-matched, perfectly coordinating colour scheme. A solid afterthought thumb is added at the end. Tension: 36 sts and 44 rounds = 10cm (4in) in stranded colourwork pattern Approximate Finished Size: Women’s medium size. Palm circumference 20.5cm (8in) by 24cm (91⁄2in) long

MITTEN BODY Work rounds 1–31 from chart, reading each round from right to left.

  3. THUMB PLACEMENT For Left Mitten: Work in patt across N1, N2 and N3, then work rst 3 sts on N4, knit the next 12 sts with waste yarn, sl these sts back on to LH needle and work in patt to end of round. For Right Mitten: Work in patt across N1 and N2, then rst 3 sts on N3, knit the next 12 sts with waste yarn, sl these sts back on to LH needle and work in patt across rem sts on N3 and all sts on N4. Cont working through round 72. Please note: The nger decreases can be successfully executed working only from the chart or from the instructions below (or both).

  4. FINGER DECREASES Round 73: Dec for ngertips as foll: N1: K1, sl 1, k1, psso, work across rem sts in patt; N2: Work in patt to last 2 sts, k2tog; N3: K1, sl 1, k1, psso, work across rem sts in patt; N4: Work in patt to last 2 sts, k2tog. (4 sts dec) Rep last round 12 more times, through round 85. (20 sts remain, with 5 sts on each needle) Sl all sts from N2 to N1, and all sts from N4 to N3. (10 sts on each needle) Break MC, leaving a 45.5cm (18in) long tail to graft remaining sts. Using tail, use kitchener stitch to join sts at top of mitten.

  5. WORKING THE THUMB Remove waste yarn from thumb opening and place 24 sts on four needles, with 6 sts on each needle. With MC, begin at lower right needle, pick up 1 st in gap before N1, then k 6 sts on needle; k 6 sts from N2 and pick up 1 st in gap at end of opening; pick up 1 st in gap before N3, then k 6 sts on needle; k 6 sts from N4 and pick up 1 st in gap at end of opening. (28 sts, with 7 sts on each needle) Join into round, pm for beginning of round. Work thumb as foll: Round 1: Knit. Cont in stocking stitch until thumb is 1.2cm (1⁄2in) short of desired length.

  6. WORKING THUMB DECREASES Next Round: Dec for top of thumb as foll: N1: Sl 1, k1, psso, knit to end of needle; N2: Knit to last 2 sts, k2tog; N3: Sl 1, k1, psso, knit to end of needle; N4: Knit to last 2 sts, k2tog. (4 sts dec) Rep last round 5 more times. (8 sts remain, with 2 sts on each needle) Break yarn, leaving a tail approx 20.5cm (8in) long.
