First you need a base dress on which to sew the flowers. You can either get a plain dress at a thrift store or one you have lying around, or you could make a sweet dress from a vintage pattern or something. It is up to you! I would definitely advise using either stretchy fabric or make sure the dress has a zipper.
Next you need to make the base layer for the flowers. You can choose any color you like, I chose white because it was more summery and similar to the original Fendi dress. I took squares and little rectangles of linen and then folded them in and ironed the folds until they resembled circle-like polygons. Tip: you can use fabric glue to glue down some of the folds if you'd like, I did on a few and it was very nice. Also, you can iron multiple layers at a time and it still works.
Next you add one layer of a colored fabric to add a little pop in your flower. I used light pink. Then, cut strips of fabric to make the first swirl of fabric. This really is all up to you, I made sure my strips matched my dress. but if you want to have many different colors, go for it! With the strips of fabric, you sew little swirls around the base layer and the color layer. This helps things stay in place when you pin the flowers onto the base dress. Tip: Iron the flowers flat after you are done sewing on swirls. I felt like this helped.
Next, you need to cut more strips of a more billowy, silkier fabric. I used a sheer fabric. I think it looks kind of nice when it sheds a little bit, it makes it look more like a flower. You need to take your flat flowers with one swirl and pin them onto the base dress. Make a pattern if you'd like, I did not really, I just made sure it was pleasing to the eye. All of my flowers were a different size. I think that makes it look more organic. Then take the sheer fabric strips and sew them over the first swirl into another swirl. This locks the flowers to the dress. If you make these strips wider, the flowers will be fluffier and realistic. Continue this until you cover the entire dress or only some spots.
