At Ophir Yarn and Fiber, we focus on making everything involving fiber and yarn crafting fun for everybody!  This DIY description of how to make wet felted "jelly rolls" from Merino wool is a great example.  The jelly rolls are easy to make, fun to do, and great for a family activity because children work with a number of mediums (water, wool, textured safe tools) and get a result that is beautiful and original.  The jelly roll slices can be made into jewelry or needle felted onto scarves, sweaters, shawls and hats!  Wool felt is a great material because it is soft and naturally fire resistant.

You Will Need (2 things)

  • Wool Roving
  • Sushi Rolling Mat

Steps (8 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

    Assemble Your Tools
Lay out a large towel or mat on Flat, waterproof surfact. Have 4-6 colors of wool roving (Merino wool is best), a sushi mat or bubble wrap, a tray or tub to catch the water, and a container for hot, soapy water. (A small spray bottle is optional.) Use dish soap, such as Dove.

  2. 2

    Lay out roving in layers
Pull off small tufts of wool from your first roving color and spread out to make the 1st layer. The thinner the better. If you don’t want other layers to show through, avoid separation. Spray or drip soapy water on this first layer.

  3. 3

Add layer with fibers perpendicular to each other

Make each layer the same way as the first one, but lay out each perpendicular to the one below.

  4. 4

Repeat wetting process with soapy water with each layer. Add 4-6 colored layers in this way.

  5. 5

Roll Wool square tightly from 1 end
Starting at the bottom edge of your wool square, roll the layers into one big roll, as tightly as you can.

  6. 6

Grasping the roll with both hands, lift it into the bowl or tub of hot, soap water. Do not let go of the wool. Gently squeeze the air out of the wool by slightly opening your hands and closing as moving them slowly along the length of the roll. After 3-4 minutes in the water, lift roll out onto towel.

  7. 7

Continue squeezing along the roll. It will be very soapy. After 2-3 minutes of squeezing, the wool in the roll should be starting to stick together. Now you can move the roll to the sushi mat or bubble wrap and gently move over the surface of the sushi mat or bubble wrap.

  8. 8

Let the jelly roll dry for 24 hours, then cut into slices and use to decorate scarves, sweaters, shawls or headgear made of natural fiber yarn (this can be done with sewing or needle felting) or use to make fiber art jewelry. Enjoy!
