  • Step 1

To make the outer case, measure your tablet and add 2½ in. (6 cm) onto the width to allow for the depth of the tablet and the seam allowances, and 3¼ in. (8 cm) onto the length to allow for the depth, seam allowances, and closing flap. Cut two pieces of gray felt this size and one piece of black felt 7¼ x 6 in. (18 x 15 cm) for the screen. Cut a piece of pale blue felt to 1¼ x 6 in. (3.5 x 15 cm).

Using black thread and straight stitch, sew the black piece to one of the grey pieces, 1¾ in. (4.5 cm) up from the bottom and centered between each side to make the front screen.
Stitch the strip of pale blue to the bottom of the black screen using blue thread and small straight stitches.

Use cream embroidery floss and a combination of backstitch and satin stitch to sew the reception, time, and battery life icons just below the top edge of the black screen.

  • Step 4

You can personalize the icons to your own style of tablet or use the ones I have designed. Each icon is 7/8 in. (2 cm) square.

Text Message icon (A): cut a green square and a cream speech bubble. Stitch the speech bubble to the background using cream thread and tiny running stitches.

Calendar icon (B): cut a cream square and a narrow red strip. Sew the strip across the top of the square using red thread and tiny running stitches. Embroider the date in backstitch using black floss.

Camera icon (C): cut a grey square and a black camera. Sew the camera to the square using black thread. Embroider the detail using backstitch in gray floss.

Photos icon (D): cut a cream square and embroider segments of color using satin stitch and floss in orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, purple, violet, and red.

Videos icon (E): cut a turquoise square and a cream strip. Sew the strip to the top of the square with cream thread. Embroider chevrons in satin stitch using black floss.

Maps icon (F): cut a green square and cream roads. Stitch the roads to the square with cream thread. Using floss, embroider a blue line using backstitch and a blue road sign using satin stitch. Add a red line in backstitch across the top of the road sign and a yellow road in satin stitch.

Reminders icon (G): cut a cream square. Make French knot dots on the left and running stitch lines using floss in four different colors.

Weather icon (H): cut a pale blue square and a cream cloud. Sew the cloud to the square using cream thread and then use yellow floss to sew a sun in satin stitch.

Trim 1 3/8 in. (3.5cm) off one short end of the gray felt piece for the back. Place the back and front pieces right sides together and sew around the sides and bottom with a sewing machine, taking a 5/8 in. (1.5cm) seam allowance.

Turn the case right side out and then shape the extra piece at the top of the front piece into a flap. Sew the two snap fasteners to the underside of the flap and in a matching position on the back of the case, as closures.

    btw...
The fabric quantities are for a case to fit an iPad, so amend the dimensions following the instructions in step 1 if your tablet is smaller or larger
