I always have a hard time finding something to give my mom for Mother’s Day—the woman has everything! If you have the same problem, try creating something unique just for your mom; that’s what I did with this project. Since my mom loves anything vintage (now you know where I get it from), I altered the spool and flowers in this sculpture using vintage sheet music that we found together in an antique store. I then created flowers from old book pages to accent the bobbins. Finally, I stitched a personal sentiment onto a felt banner and wrapped it around the spool. These special touches make this a unique Mother’s Day gift. This project would also make a wonderful wedding gift—just stitch the bride and groom’s monograms or wedding date onto the felt.

Instructions

  1. Small screen shot 2012 11 16 at 14.45.48

    Using a paper trimmer, cut 2 pieces of felt to 3" × 12" (8cm × 30cm).

  2. Small screen shot 2012 11 16 at 14.45.56

Holding the pieces of felt together, trim the long edges with scallop scissors.

  3. Small screen shot 2012 11 16 at 14.46.02

Trim the corners off of the right side of the felt pieces. Trim all 3 edges at this end using scallop scissors.

Using a disappearing fabric pen, write your sentiment on the felt. Draw a heart on each end.

Next, fill in each drawn heart with a satin stitch.

Sew along the scallop edges of the felt piece using a backstitch.

Cut 2 pieces of seam binding, each 12" (30cm) long. Use fabric adhesive to attach both to the back of the stitched piece of felt at the center of the left edge (the edge without the corners cut off). You’ll use these pieces to tie the banner to the project.

  9. Small screen shot 2012 11 16 at 14.51.35

Cut 1 piece of seam binding 3" (3cm) long, fold it in half and, using fabric adhesive, attach it to the back of the stitched piece of felt at the center of the right edge.

Using a flower die, cut 1 flower from a remnant of fabric. Attach the flower to the right end of the banner next to a stitched heart using fabric adhesive.
