I will take you step by step from the beginning to the end and what supplies you will need. My ornament is just an example of what you can do as a simple design. Hello Friends! I wanted to share this inexpensive Christmas Tree Ornament made to look like faux leather with gold gilding on it. I will take you step by step from the beginning to the end and what supplies you will need. My ornament is just an example of what you can do as a simple design. You can do whatever your heart calls you to do. Let your creativity loose and do wonders.
The supplies you will need for this project are: Paper Mache Disk Hot glue gun Mod Podge Tissue Paper (toilet paper or thin paper towel) Pencil Acrylic Paint : Dark Brown, Light Brown, Black, Gold or whatever color you would like!
First you will draw your pattern or design you would like with pencil on your paper mache disk, or you can freehand it.
The next step is to line your design with hot glue. You can do at least 3 layers to get the thickness of your design so it will give that 3D effect.
You will begin to spread Mod Podge all over your hot glue design. Make sure you get it all over and not miss a spot. This is an important step.
After you put the Mod Podge you will take your tissue and either cut it or rip it into pieces. I like to rip it, it gives a more organic feel to the project.
After you apply the tissue you want to make sure the design and the disk are completely covered. This is also important because paint does not stick to the hot glue when it is time to paint.
After the tissue is completely covering everything you need to put another coat of Mod Podge to cover all the pieces again. You can let it dry after this step or are in a hurry you can blow dry it on high heat to speed along the process.
After the Mod Podge is dry. You can begin to start painting the ornament. To make it look like leather. I like to use different colors of browns. I like to build up the colors because leather is not always the same. I start with a base coat and build up.
I like to add a touch of black to the design to pop it out to give it more of the 3D effect. After the black is added I like to go in with my metallic colors. I used gold because that is going with our Christmas theme this year. You can use whatever metallic paints that are out there. They have some amazing colors!
You can line the back of the ornament with leather or felt or fabric to give it that extra finish!
