A.K.A. Get rid of your magazine clutter!
In NYC, space is a precious commodity. Rent is high, and you are paying a pretty penny for every square inch of your abode. Any dead weight that sits around and does not get used? It’s gotta go.

I decided to get rid of my entire magazine collection (any ex-fashion student can attest to this sick addiction that takes over your home). I followed these simple steps so that I could keep the inspiring images, but chuck the heavy glossy excess.

  • How to make a scrapbook. Fashion Scrapbook - Step 1
    Step 1

Go through your magazines. Rip out the pages that are inspiring. This could take a day or a week. Do 5 magazines at a time, and take breaks in between, or you will get glossy burn-out.

Go through that pile and say… “Does this inspire me? Is this how I want to dress or design? Am I going to care if I never see this image again?” If the answer is no, throw it out. You will not miss it.

If you only like one image on the page, cut it out. If you like the whole page, put it aside.

    Step 4

Get a big scrap book with blank pages, and some glue. Open the book, and go to town. Don’t think too hard. Don’t “design” the pages extensively. Put similar colors, textures, and aesthetics together and paste them down.

When you’re done with a magazine, put it in recycling immediately. No turning back.

This might feel traumatic at first, but when you see book shelf space increasing and the sense of “clutter” decreasing, trauma is replaced by LIBERATION!

Disclaimer: Some magazines ARE worth keeping. If you are wondering whether your magazine is worth keeping, you can ask yourself these questions:

Do I look through it a few times a month?

Is it not taking up the width of 3+ magazines on my shelf?

Do I get a lot of JOY every time I see it?

Is it the iconic issue of LOVE Magazine with the pink border and saucy Paz de la Huerta on the front? (If so, keep it.)

Is this something I just can’t get on tumblr/random blogs/etc? If not, keep it!
