  • Step 1

Bend hook of coat hanger back and forth till it breaks off, discard hook. Untwist twisted ends of wire. Bend straight bottom bar of coat hanger in half. Shape one half into a desirable shape, then bend the other half to match.

  • Step 2

Take the two ends and pull them down to the bent center. Bend ends into curled hooks around center, wrap with a small strip of felt, or yarn(you're going to cover this up, so it doesn't matter what color). The wrapping will both hold the hooked ends in place, and keep them from poking the wearer.

  • Step 3

Cut legs from tights. Pull one leg over one of the wing shapes, lining up the toe stitch with the line of the hanger. Pull it very tight, so that the fabric is flat and suitable for decorating. Snip two opposite places at the opening and tie them in a knot, trim off excess. Repeat with other wing.

  • Step 4

Now you're going to wrap pretty ribbon of your choosing around the center and knots neatly, tying the ends in a knot and tucking them under other folds of ribbon to hide them.

  • Step 5

Go back to the 'panty' part of the tights, and cut off a ring from each leg, for your straps. Place the wings against the child's back to decide where you want them to hang, then pin the rings of nylon to the spots you want them to be. Stitch them in place.

  • Step 6

Now you're ready to decorate! Mine were colored with chalk pastels(keep in mind the color will be pale--red makes pink, etc.), stamped with silver ink, doodled on with iridescent glitter glue...I also disassembled fake flowers and poked the center part thru the tights, and reattached the little cap part, adding glue in between. You can do anything you like, sequins, beads, little bugs or butterflies! You can also use red or black tights to make dragon wings or bat wings! Go crazy! I wanna see versions, people!
