I think this an easy way to add color without breaking the bank. I had originally found a diy on how to do this, but then I couldn't find it again. :( I usually pin stuff I find on Pinterest. Here is my version of doing this.
Gather your supplies. Depending on the size of the box, you can get the jumbo fabric quilting squares from your local fabric/craft store for pretty cheap. You can also check for remnants in the clearance section.
I had to fix of the boxes with the trusty ol' glue gun.
Trace the size of the box onto the fabric or measure the box then transfer. You could probably make a template on your computer and print up the stencil. Make sure to allow an extra 1/4"-1/2" edge of the fabric (this will get covered up as you decoupage).
Take the mod podge and start painting thin layers on the box, take the fabric and gently press it to the box. Continue it around the inside and outside of the box. You also want to paint on a thin layer ON the fabric.
Let the box dry 20-30 minutes between layers. This is important, so that the fabric adheres and stiffens to the box. Apply about 2-3 thin layers of mod podge.
