Making essential oils using the alcohol method

This project is so crazy easy, but the waiting is a bit of a pain because you just sort of wait for 48 hours to know whether or not you’ve totally screwed it up. Thankfully coffee is a scent that’s really hard to mess up so it came out perfectly, though not as crisp or acidic as it was when it went in which is to be expected. You will have a bit of breakdown whenever you’re suspending an object in a solution but it’s not any great loss the way that this might have been if it had been jasmine or lavender. The more delicate stuff still feels way off limits to me, but I’m sure that I’ll give it a go once I’m feeling braver.

Thankfully coffee is a scent that’s really hard to mess up so it came out perfectly, though not as crisp or acidic as it was when it went in which is to be expected. Instructions

  1. Small 111998 2f2015 11 13 152037 img 7884%2b 281 29

You’re going to want to start out by coarsely grinding/chopping about 25 grams of whatever coffee you like, the oilier the better. If you try to use the dried up stuff that’s been sitting in your pantry for ages you won’t get a particularly pleasant product. Also make sure that it’s unflavored.

For the alcohol you use 75 g of Everclear to 25 g of coffee and store in a mason jar for 48 hours. Once properly steeped, strain into a shallow bowl, and allow alcohol and water to evaporate until mostly oil remains. Should be slightly less viscous than the olive oil variety.
