I specifically chose wheat grass for this project because it doesn’t need a lot of room and it can sit in the shells for a while without becoming cramped and dying the way that most seedlings would. Wheat grass is also great because you can cut it down over and over again and it will still continue to grow and produce. Not to mention you can make a nutrient packed juice out of it if you have a juicer, sadly I do not but that’s ok. Super Fun Science Fun Fact Time: eggshells make great seed starters because they’re packed with calcium, among other goodies, and they’re biodegradable. So when you go to plant your tiny fledglings in the ground they break down and give your plants a boost of the good stuff to help them grow.

Empty out your shells and remember to save eggs inside to use at a later date. Don’t forget to wash them out, otherwise all sorts of gross things will start to grow in them and I don’t mean your seeds.
Fill your shells about 3/4 of the way full with dirt, then sprinkle your seeds on top and gently press them in to your dirt.
Then just give them a couple drops of water, push in the seeds and leave them in a well lit place to grow and in a couple of days you will have tiny baby seedlings. Once your seeds have gotten to a size that makes you think that they’re strong enough to be transplanted you can move them into a bigger planter. Also, alternatively, if you grow something like wheat grass in them then you can leave them in the shells and draw faces on them and it will look like they’re tiny people with really big mohawks. Obviously I’m entirely too mature to do something like that.
