This pinafore incorporates the pattern for the simple skirt that was posted on Monday.

Instructions

  1. Small 102796 2f2014 06 24 011937 dsc00577

Continuing on from the tutorial on monday, you will firstly need to make the simple skirt from that tutorial using 2 metres of your fabric. To make the skirt, simple fold the top of your fabric down (inwards) a small way in order to make a tunnel for your elastic to pass through, then thread your elastic through. Once you've done that pull it on to measure how much elastic you will need. After you have the right length, sew the two ends together to secure them. (All of these steps are gone through in more detail in Monday's tutorial)

  2. Small 102796 2f2014 06 24 012406 dsc00586

Now with some of your left over material, sew together a rectangle of fabric. This will be the "bib" of your pinafore.

  3. Small 102796 2f2014 06 24 012511 dsc00590

Try on your skirt with this bib so you can adjust how high or low you want it to sit. Once it's in a position that you like, pin it onto the inside of the skirt. As you sew the bib onto the skirt, make sure that you aren't stretching out the elastic as you go, as this means that the bib will also be gathered when you wear it, instead of just the skirt.

  4. Small 102796 2f2014 06 24 012816 dsc00592

Now you are going to make the two straps of your pinafore. Cut four long strips of fabric approximately 8cm across (the thinner your strips, the thinner your straps). Place two of these strips with the right sides together and sew them. Cut one end of your strips into a point (as pictured). Turn the strips inside out so that the right side of the fabric is now facing outwards, and iron them flat. Continue this step again to make the second strap.

Once again you will need to try on your skirt. Taking one strap, measure it from the left of the the skirt, diagonally across your back and to the top right of the bib. Pin it in place (it's a lot easier if you have someone to help you do this part!) Do the same with the other strap, starting from the right side of your lower back to the top left of the bib. The end of each strap that finishes in a point should be the end that sits on your bib. Sew the bottom of the straps to your skirt (once again ensuring that you don't stretch the elastic as you sew.)

Pick two buttons that you like to sew on the top of the pointed ends of your straps, so that it looks like they have been buttoned onto the bib.

  7. Small 102796 2f2014 06 24 014413 dsc00599

Hem the bottom of your skirt up to the length that you want, and you have successfully finished sewing your pinafore!
