Instead of wire mesh, I used netting from a ruined laundry hamper and super glued it around the edges of the cardboard that came as the picture backing.

I painted the wooden frame black.

Thanks! I meant hot glue. It worked out surprisingly well! I folded the extra netting over the back and hot glued it all around there. I've had this set up with really heavy gold earrings for months and it's still good.
