You Will Need (6 things)

  • Rit Dye
  • Cotton Scarf
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Plastic Container(s)
  • Plastic Table Covering Table Cloth
  • Rubber Bands

Steps (3 steps, 60 minutes)

  1. 1

Start off with a pre-washed cotton scarf. Fold into 2" accordion pleats lengthwise. If you've an iron handy, it will help to make nice crisp folds.

  2. 2

Cut rubber bands and tie around the pleated scarf about every 1 1/2". A tight binding will produce more white areas.
Soak in warm water for about 10 min. This helps the fabric absorb the dye. Squeeze excess water from scarf before dyeing.

  3. 3

Mix 1/2 cup RIT violet liquid dye with 4 cups of very hot water from tea kettle or microwave. Fill plastic container with 1 gallon of hot water, add dye solution and stir well.
Dunk scarf in dye bath for 5-10 min. until you're loving the color. Remember it'll dry lighter.
Remove from dye, cut the rubber bands and rinse in water until runs clear. Wash it in warm water with mild detergent and hang dry.
Woo-hoo!! You're done and so easy, right??
