About

During my search for costuming ideas for my newest larp charater I thought it would be a great idea to have a hat similar to Batman's Harley Quinn. I scowered the net and found no pattern that I liked well enough to make a hat from, and most were the Marti Gras style 3 tailed hats.

I created this one with a little guidance from the standard three tailed hats. If you have any questions there is a more detailed tutorial on my blog.

You Will Need (6 things)

  • Measuring Tape
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine
  • 1 yd your choice Fabric per side of the hat.
  • Straight Pins
  • 1 yd 1/2 in Elastic

Steps (7 steps, 180 minutes)

  1. 1

Start with Your fabric, Choose what tones or tone you want, You can have up to four different tones with this hat. I chose two.

Measure the length that you would like the tails to hang from the middle of your head down the side of your head. the width of fabric should reflect it. I chose to have super long tails, so I used the entire width of my fabric.

  2. 2

Cut the length at around the 10" mark. You can add more, the more you have the deeper the hat will be.

Do the same Twice per color ( or once per color if using four colors)

  3. 3

Roughly Cut out this curve shape in all four peices. If you want a snug cap without elastic measure your head, and devide it by 4. this will be where you begin the curve.

  4. 4

Pin along the sewing edges. Make sure that you dont sew along the opening 90* line.

  5. 5

Pin the vertical openings together leaving the bottom open for the hat part. Sew along your stitching carefuly. It's easy to get extra fabric caught in the stitches at the top.

  6. 6

Add your decorations, and roll up the open edge of your hat 1 inch and sew. Be sure to leave a gap big enough to pull elastic through.

  7. 7

Sew elastic together and gap closed, and now enjoy your new hat!
