DIY Dowel Lamp

Make a cool geometric lamp using wooden dowels

About

I came up with the idea of making this lamp while I was "playing" with old wooden dowels I found in my basement. They were so many that I had to find something to do with them.
Since I love making lamps, I tried to compose one with some dowels...
The result turned out amazing!

The mix of simple geometry and light creates amazing light effects and I'm very proud of the result.
I hope you like it too!

You Will Need (9 things)

  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Cutter
  • White Glue
  • 124 Wooden Dowels mine are about 7cm (2.75 inches) long with a diameter of 5mm (0.19 inches), but you can use longer ones to obtain a larger lamp
  • Hot Glue
  • 1 piece of Cardboard
  • 1 Light Socket (with plug and cable)
  • LED Light Bulb

Steps (13 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

Glue the tips of 2 wooden dowels together in a L shape and do the same for other 2 dowels.

  2. 2

Join the 2 L shaped dowels to create a square. Glue them together with hot glue. Create a total of 31 squares like this one.

  3. 3

Cut a square out of cardboard that is about 2 millimeters (0.03 inches) smaller than your wooden squares.

  4. 4

Draw the outline of your bulb holder in the middle of the cardboard square.

  5. 5

Cut the circle out to create the hole for your bulb holder.

  6. 6

Put some white glue on a dowel square and lay another square on top of it.

  7. 7

Again, glue another square on top just like you did before. This will be the base of your lamp.

  8. 8

Now glue the cardboard square on top, always using white glue (or hot glue if you prefer).

  9. 9

Put some glue on the cardboard's edges and place a wooden square on top.

  10. 10

Glue another square on top but make sure that the 4 sides of the previous square face the 4 angles of the last one.

  11. 11

Glue a new square on top placing it on the same side that the first square is facing and do the opposite for the next one.

  12. 12

Keep gluing all of your remaining squares this way and finally let the glue dry.

  13. 13

When the glue is completely dry, insert your bulb holder and LED light bulb and be proud of the result!
