I am going to instruct you how to make both swirled and solid dreads in this tutorial! I love synthetic hair and have been making dreads for the last six years! I hope you enjoy and that I will get to see some of your lovely pictures!

Instructions

  1. Small dscf9351 1311668836

First get the desired portion of hair you would like, The more hair you use, the thicker your dread will be I like to spread it out over my finger and if it's covers a third then that's usually the right thickness for a normal sized dread. If you wanted thicker poofier dreads just add more hair, thinner use a bit less.

  2. Small dscf9352 1311668930

Just to double check it is the correct thickness, pinch the dread with one hand and twist the hair to see that it is roughly the thickness you would like it to be. It will be a bit thinner because it isn't back combed yet but it should give you the right idea.

  3. Small dscf9353 1311668990

Put your clamp over the back of a chair, and put half of the dread on one side and the other facing you, make sure the top of your dread is twisted still and then clamp it into place.

  4. Small dscf9355 1311669057

Back comb the dread pushing away from you and holding the tip of the hair so that it is ratted towards the root. Don't forget to occasionally seperate the hair if there is a clump that gets too knotted, it will make lumps in your dreads and make it uneven. Try to pull the hair apart and back comb it several time so there are no hard knots and it is about even throughout, with a bit of a tail so you can have a thin tip. For swirled dread, leave the second color out and do not back comb it.

  5. Small dscf9356 1311669152

In this step, I am creating a swirled dread. If you just want solid all you need to do is twist the dread tightly until it takes your desired shape. For swirling you wrap the secondary color over top of your twisted dread and steam it into place.

  6. Small dscf9358 1311669277

Continue this down until you reach three inches towards the end of the dread. Steam thoroughly, and twist your dread back into shape and steam again if you feel like part of it is loose.

  7. Small dscf9359 1311669365

Take the tip of the dread between your thumb and forefinger, and twist it very gently until you get the desired tip. This part is a bit tricky to steam, so be careful on your fingers!

  8. Small dscf9363 1311669410

Flip your dread over and repeat on the other side!

  9. Small dscf9365 1311669442

This is what your dread should look like when it is just about finished, remember to trim the straggley bits off with a pair of hair scissors!

When your dreads are all finished and trimmed they should look like this! TADA!!!
