These take a while to make, but the end result is worth it. They're actually pretty easy. It's very similar to the other how-to I've posted, awareness ribbon friendship bracelets. If you can do one you can do the other.

Description

These take a while to make, but the end result is worth it. They're actually pretty easy. It's very similar to the other how-to I've posted, awareness ribbon friendship bracelets. If you can do one you can do the other.

Instructions

  1. Small 100 0344 1301083798

Pick out some nice colours. I feel spring-like today :P You need a ton for your background colour. I used a whole skein of that yellow and a little bit from another. You only need a normal amount for the colour of the diamonds. I'm just gonna say yellow and purple for now, you convert it to your colours when you're doing it.

  2. Small 100 0345 1301083937

Cut six strands of yellow that are twice as long as your arm. Cut two strands of purple that are twice as long as your arm plus about 10 inches. They do most of the knotting so they need to be longer in order to not run out. It's shown better in step 4. Side note: Yes, that's my laptop. I like having a nice background for these and I didn't want to move all my stuff over to the table.

  3. Small 100 0346 1301085314

Make two separate bracelets. Each one has three yellow strands and one purple strand. To make sure that the purple strands' extra length is distributed evenly, fold the purple strand in half, then fold all the yellow strands in half, and put the bent parts together and tie a know. (instead of lining up one end and folding in half - then you'd have a long purple one and a short one.)

  4. Small 100 0347 1301085522

Here's how much extra purple I had. I think it looks like too much, but might as well be safe, right?

  5. Small 100 0348 1301085643

Pin one end of one bracelet to something (if you're using your pants, don't go right on your knee. After a while it makes holes. Go on the seam where it's stronger). Arrange the threads so there are three yellow on each side and two purple in the middle.

  6. Small 100 0352 1301085762

First row is a chevron. Tie a knot with the left string on the three strings to the right of it. Tie a knot with the right string on the three strings to the left of it. Tie the centre strings around each other. When I say knot, I mean double knot. Always.

  7. Small 100 0354 1301085879

Make three more rows like this, so that the last row is purple.

  8. Small 100 0355 1301086147

Do the exact same thing to the other bracelet.

  9. Small 100 0356 1301086093

This is probably the most important part. With the two inside threads (the ones I separated there) tie a double knot. It needs to be close to the bracelets, like below (or maybe above .. it's going funny on me. the one that says LIKE THIS).

  10. Small 100 0358 1301086171

    LIKE THIS! :)

  11. Small 100 0357 1301086145

    NOT LIKE THIS! >:(

  12. Small 100 0360 1301086265

Once you're satisfied with the connection (it won't be perfect) it's time to make the first diamond. Use the two threads you just tied together. With the right thread, tie a knot on each of the two strings to the right. With the left one, tie twice to the left.

  13. Small 100 0361 1301086399

Tie the two new centre threads around each other. Tie the right thread once to the right, and tie the left thread to the string on the left of it.

  14. Small 100 0362 1301086443

Tie the two new centre threads together. Do you have a little diamond shape? :) Mine's a bit holey, check out the tips in the last few steps to fix that.

  15. Small 100 0364 1301086448

With the right centre thread on the left bracelet (you know, second purple from the left) tie a knot on the three strands to the left. Repeat on the other side with the third purple thread from the left. Tie the two purple threads around each other. YOU JUST MADE A DIAMOND, SON.

  16. Small 100 0365 1301086618

Fill in the sides: With the furthest left yellow strand, tie a knot on the two strands to the right of it. With the new furthest left strand, tie a knot on the string to the right of it. You should have a very tiny triangle.

  17. Small 100 0366 1301086703

With the leftmost purple thread, tie a knot on each of the three yellow threads to the left.

  18. Small 100 0367 1301086720

Repeat on the right side, in reverse. Two knots inward with the right strand, one knot inward with the new right strand ...

  19. Small 100 0369 1301087094

... and three knots outward with the right purple strand. You should have two big X's.

  20. Small 100 0370 1301087033

Now it's time for more diamonds! (you can start on either side, we won't judge you :P) Remember to start with a knot in the middle, and work outward. Row 1: 5 knots (that's the picture.) Row 2: 3 knots Row 3: 1 knot

  21. Small 100 0373 1301087221

Once you have the inside made, tie the purple thread on one side on each of the three strings toward the centre. (Off-topic: that's white-out all over my hands. I was scraping it off my waterbottle and it stayed.)

  22. Small 100 0374 1301087422

Tie the other purple strand toward the centre and tie the purple strands around each other to finish your second diamond. This isn't very hard, is it?

  23. Small 100 0375 1301087531

Do the same thing on the other side for a third diamond.

  24. Small 100 0376 1301087558

And now, you can make another diamond in the middle. It's already looking pretty :) To complete the rest of your bracelet: Wherever you see the bottom of an X, you need to put a diamond there. If there are no places to put diamonds, fill in the sides (steps 16 - 18).

  25. Small 100 0377 1301087664

There are two ways you can end the bracelet. To do both you need to get to a point where you just made two diamonds next to each other and haven't filled in the sides. The first way is to separate the strands into two bracelets again, and start making more chevrons separatley, and then make the braids. (I wanted to post the how-to right away so I didn't bother to finish the yellow one.)

  26. Small 100 0378 1301087838

The other way is to forget about doing extra rows and just make braids straight off. You'll need four braids. Divide the strands up into four groups of four (hold two together while you're braiding so it's like three).

  27. Small 100 0379 1301088033

Tie a little knot at the end of each one and cut the leftovers off. To tie it on, put one braid through one loop, and tie it around the braid next to it. Do the same for the other loop and other 2 braids.

  28. Small 100 0380 1301088061

TIPS IF YOU'RE LAZY (like me) That's a lot of tying to do for a whole wrist. If you're sick of making diamonds, there are two things you can do to make your bracelet longer: 1. Untie the knots at the top. This adds a lot of length. Try jamming a paperclip in there. 2. Make the braids on the end really long. That way you can just tie the braids at their ends and have lot of braid going around your wrist.

Wear with pride :) If I'm unclear, ask in the comments. If you love it, fave it! If you make it, version it! Happy crafting!
