Doctor Who Christmas

Ornament, Doctor Who

I decided to do a Doctor Who Christmas tree this year and am making many of my own ornaments. This ornament is from the episode "The Girl In The Fire Place". I was given a mask years ago and it has been collecting dust all this time (apparently waiting for just this occasion). I don't know what it is made of, it is thick and porcelain or ceramic is my guess, but you can use whatever you have or can find. Don't worry about how long this project takes, you aren't actually working on it for a whole 25 hours. But the Puffy Paint needs 24 hours to dry.

Description

I decided to do a Doctor Who Christmas tree this year and am making many of my own ornaments. This ornament is from the episode "The Girl In The Fire Place". I was given a mask years ago and it has been collecting dust all this time (apparently waiting for just this occasion). I don't know what it is made of, it is thick and porcelain or ceramic is my guess, but you can use whatever you have or can find. Don't worry about how long this project takes, you aren't actually working on it for a whole 25 hours. But the Puffy Paint needs 24 hours to dry.

Instructions

The mask came like this so I did not have to prime it in any way. I would suggest if the mask you get is not white that you paint it white with Gesso or another primer.

  2. Small 106322 2f2014 12 16 231514 20141204 221936

I started by painting the top part of the eyes and the lips red.

  3. Small 106322 2f2014 12 16 231519 20141204 222458

Next, I added a little bit of purple under the eyes, kind of looks like she has baggy eyes right now but the puffy paint will help with that.

  4. Small 106322 2f2014 12 16 231530 20141204 224653

I used some gold puffy paint and painted it on with a brush on the top left and right of the head. Then I outlined those areas and added details to the eyes and between the eyes leaving it puffy to give more dimension. Letting the puffy paint dry was the longest part of this whole process. You have to let it sit for 24 hours according to the bottle.

At this point I didn't have the doll hair yet, so I used my hot glue gun to glue the ornament hook to the back. Then I put it on my tree so it could dry.

I liked the ornament, but knew it was missing something so I ran to the store to get doll hair. This was my first time working with this stuff so I really didn't know what to expect. Luckily it was cheap so if I messed up I could get more. Thankfully I didn't mess up. :)

I started by undoing the pile and taking two strands together and winding it back and forth to a length longer then what I would need, don't cut the strands just yet. I used the end of the hair to tie a knot in the center. This stuff is very silky so I wasn't able to make a tight knot.

After much consideration about how to attach the hair to the mask I decided to use my hot glue gun. I started by gluing the middle down so that the knot wouldn't come undone.

  9. Small 106322 2f2014 12 16 231624 20141211 211459

Next, I glue the rest of the hair down, just around the edges so that the rest of the hair would be loose. Then I tugged on the hair gently to stretch it out a bit and get the look I wanted.

  10. Small 106322 2f2014 12 16 231637 20141211 212922

Time for the hair cut. I cut little bits at a time so that I wouldn't cut too much off, and I made sure that I didn't pull on the hair while cutting because of the curls.

Finally, put your mask on your tree and do a happy dance because it looks AWESOME!!!
