  • How to make a bookcase / cubby. Diy Z Shelf Basket Storage Trolley - Step 1
    Step 1

Here's a cutting list using 22mm thick wood for shelving, or at 15mm thick for the shelves and supports.

    Tools and Materials Needed:
220mm x 22mm staircase timber, or similar board (I used offcuts)
12mm thick strip of plywood (Or similar offcut that's roughly 1200mm x 85mm to mitre and cut in half)
Mitre saw or hand saw and sliding bevel
    Clamps
    Sawhorses or workbench
    Wood glue
    Combi drill
    Tape measure
    Countersunk bit
    Wood screws
    Orbital sander
    Palm router (or sanding block)
    Chamfer router bit
    Castor wheels
4L Curver baskets* or 4L Wham Studio Grey Boxes*
Annie Sloan dark wax or dark furniture wax
Lint-free cloth (or even better, an old cotton shirt or rag, which is cheaper!)
    3mm wood drill bit
    Wood filler
    Ear defenders
    Safety goggles
    Dust mask for sanding

    Step 2

First, cut your timber cutting list with a mitre saw or hand saw.

Note: the support lengths really depend on the height of your chosen boxes.

    Step 3

Pre-drill 3 screw holes at the top and bottom of your supports and countersink each one so you can busy the screw heads.

    Step 4

Use wood glue and screw the supports to the top and bottom shelf, placing it evenly between.

    Repeat for the other side.

Optional: If you want to soften the sharp edges, run along with a chamfer router bit along the edges with a router.

    OR, use a sanding block.

    Step 8

Fill the screw holes with wood filler and leave to dry before returning to sand smooth.

Now you can paint it, oil it or, give it a vintage look as I did with Annie Sloan dark wax by rubbing on with a lint free cloth.

Then screw some castor wheels on the bottom and that's it!
