One thing I love for summer is unique and colorful prints that make an otherwise ordinary piece special. I got the idea for this jacket while watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Rob was wearing a denim jacket with this Mexican serape-like fabric on the back and ever since then I’ve been on the lookout for some fabric to make one with. It’s kind of hard to come by, especially if you want to use fabric instead of cutting up a real blanket, and can get a bit expensive to buy already made. I found the fabric on eBay and got a half yard for about $10.

I used a Gap jacket I already owned.
Make a pattern of the area you want to cover with fabric.
Place it over the fabric and cut out around it, leaving about 1/2-1? longer on each side to turn over for the hem.
Lay the fabric over your jacket and hem it to fit. I didn’t make a perfect rectangle because the lines were slightly curved, so I took a while to get it right. Hem just the fabric itself- not right onto the jacket.
When that’s done, take it off the jacket and press with an iron. Get some wonder under and cut to fit inside the fabric. (It doesn’t have to be perfect, just make sure it’s not wider than the fabric.)
Now we’re going to iron everything. The wonder under will basically glue the fabric to the jacket. I placed that on top of the jacket and then the fabric on top of that. Make sure everything is lined up, and then following directions on the wonder under, iron a section in the middle of the fabric. I did this to make sure it wouldn’t slide around and then continued to iron the rest.
All that’s left now is to sew around it.
Repeat directions for any other place you’re putting fabric. (For mine, it was a little strip in the front.)
