If you have a lace mask template ready to go, skip straight to step 3. If not, start off by putting your face in saran wrap. Breathe in the air so the saran wrap sticks directly onto your skin. Yes, it sounds silly. But trust me, it works. NOW QUICK, BEFORE YOU SUFFOCATE, indicate with a marker: -Where your tear-ducts, tip of your nose and sides of your head are. OR -Outline how your mask sits on your face (Eye holes and stuff) If you really need to breathe, peel the saran wrap off your nose and mouth and breathe and put in back.
Take off the saran wrap from your face and breathe; you have SURVIVED. Lay your marked saran wrap flat on a sheet of paper or a flat surface. Draw your desired template on the saran wrap with a marker and let your creativity FLOWW~ Don't worry about mistakes, you haven't made the finished product yet.
Take a piece of parchment/ non-stick paper and put it on top of your beautiful template. It should be visible through the paper. Plug in your handy-dandy glue gun and line your surface with newspaper so the glue doesn't destroy your surface. (you can use coloured glue sticks so you don't need to spray paint it later but I couldn't find any until 2 months after I made my mask) Dance or eat or drink something while waiting for your glue gun to heat up.
Now, FOR THE FUN PART. Use your glue gun to draw on your template on the non-stick paper. (I recommend testing it out on other parts of the parchment/non-stick paper to see if your glue gun allows for an even flow) (Also, start with the eyes first!) You may have to use up quite a number of glue sticks but the results are worth it! Don't worry if you mess up a few parts, you can use a cutter to carve it off later on!
Dance again or eat or drink something else while waiting for your mask to harden. When the glue dries, peel it off the parchment/ non-stick paper. (It should come off fairly easily, rather than putting the hot glue on the saran wrap because that will cause it to stick and ugh) Carve off any bits you feel are ugly or uneven. Add more glue to some parts if you need.
When you're happy with your mask, flip it over so that the flat side is facing you and put fabric glue all over it so your fabric can stick to all parts of your mask. Take your fabric, lace or netting and stick it onto the fabric glue. Put something heavy on top of it while it dries if you want.
Cut away the excess fabric from the eye openings and around the mask using a pair of scissors and make sure there aren't many visible threads showing. (I didn't do a very good job with that sadly)
Oh its coming together so nicely~ Now, here's another interesting part. Run some hot water over the mask to melt it so that its easily mouldable and bends easily almost like a sheet of saran wrap. NOW QUICK, put it onto your face and mould it to the shape of your face, making sure the eye openings are where you want them to be. Press down into the sides of your nose and wherever else. Keep holding it in place while it dries. (Sit in front of a fan, it helps!)
I hope your arms aren't too sore now! When the mask is successfully moulded to your face, take it off and set it on something curved so that it keeps its curved shape. Allow the fabric to dry completely before continuing to the next step! Don't worry if your mask doesn't remain curved, the dried hot glue is pliable enough to curve even when its completely dry.
NOW FOR SOME COLOUR :D Spray your mask with spray paint and make sure you don't breathe in any of the fumes. Make sure your whole mask is completely painted and leave it to dry again. (This method causes both the fabric and the mask to be the same colour. If you want them to be in different colours, try painting the mask with acrylic paint or nail polish instead!)
Rhinestones? Sequins? Glitter? Add what you like! Or you can leave your mask plain like I did! It's glamorous like that anyway!
VOILA! YOUR MASK IS COMPLETE~ Now give yourself a pat on the back as you try on your new mask and look like a million bucks!
EXCELLENT~ So how do I put it on? Well, there are a couple of methods on how to put your mask on. 1. Eyelash glue: -Dot it on the back of your mask on some points and stick it on your face. Hold it in place for about 30 seconds for the glue to dry. (it'll dry clear if you buy the one that dries clear) -Fuss free and ensures that no stupid elastic strings are visible BUT X> Eyelash glue sticks to your foundation (if you're wearing make up), and could ruin the mask + I'm too scared to use make up remover on the spray paint and hot glue. X>Not easy to repeatedly put on and take off your mask. 2. Elastic string/ Ribbon: -Attach it to your mask by threading the string through the fabric and glueing it/ tying it in place -Easy to put on and take off the mask over and over again. BUT X> String/ Ribbon is visible and causes your hair to be in a mess X> Risk of your string or ribbon detaching from your mask/ snapping. 3. A Stick to hold your mask to your face -Take a stick (like a chopstick etc) and stick it onto your mask with glue or tape. -Good if you want to be like YO DUDE ITS ME -Won't mess up the rest of your face/ hair BUT: X> Kinda annoying to always hold up and put on a table or something X> You may need to add flowers or other things to cover up the joint between the mask and the stick.
