Description

Love the West Elm Herringbone Floor mirror, but can't afford it's price tag? DIY it yourself for less than 10% of the cost!

Instructions

  1. Small 2014 02 24 235056 building 20the 20herringbone 20floor 20mirror1

Start with your oversized floor mirror which we found at Lowes for $25. Then take two or three 2x4's (depending on the dimensions of your mirror) and cut them to size to surround the mirror, cutting at 45 degree angles with a miter saw.

  2. Small 2014 02 24 235155 building 20the 20herringbone 20floor 20mirror

Using a table saw, cut grooves into the 2x4's at 1/8" x 1/2" to slide the edges of the mirror into.

  3. Small 2014 02 24 235300 sanding

Then after securing each of the four corners with wood glue and screws, sand down all the sides.

At this point you can choose to stain & poly your mirror frame, or paint it in whatever style you'd like. I chose a herringbone pattern similar to the West Elm design, which I painted using blue painters tape.

  5. Small 2014 02 24 235511 whitewash

After painting on the navy blue herringbone design over white, I wanted to slightly mute the boldness of that navy color. I chose to whitewash the entire face of the frame using a whitewashing tutorial I found on Pinterest.

  6. Small 2014 02 24 235901 edges

After letting that dry, I then stained the outside and inside edges of the frame with natural wood stain so it was a nice, light color. The one coat of varnish - and we're done!
