Description

While it’s probably easier to find hair chalk or soft pastels, sometimes it’s really gratifying to build something from the ground up. If you’re into doing things yourself, try out this chalk recipe.

Instructions

  1. Mix the kaolin clay and powder colorant in a mixing bowl with your hands. (I like Bramble Berry neon pigments best, but any oxide pigment will work.)

  2. In a smaller bowl, mix the arrowroot powder and water together.

  3. Microwave the smaller bowl for three seconds in order to thicken the powder and water into a paste.

  4. Using gloves, add witch hazel to the clay mixture and combine well.

  5. Add the arrowroot mixture to the clay mixture and combine with your hands until you get a clay-like consistency. If it’s too crumbly, try adding tiny amounts of witch hazel until you get the right consistency.

  6. Shape the mixture to resemble a stick of chalk and lay it out to dry overnight (for about 12 hours).
