Well, the basic concept about bright, vivid hair colours might be known to all of you. I wanna show you how to mix your own shades ( so you either don't have to buy 5 colours at once OR you get a shade they do not sell! ) and how to get bangs ( oor a whole head ) in different colours easily!
Well, the basic concept about bright, vivid hair colours might be known to all of you. I wanna show you how to mix your own shades ( so you either don't have to buy 5 colours at once OR you get a shade they do not sell! ) and how to get bangs ( oor a whole head ) in different colours easily!
This is what I'm starting with. Yah, bad hair day, crappy pic, crappy me, BAD roots. I just can't afford to go get them bleached, SO I'm using a rather dark colour this time, because it partly colours my chocolate brown too. The contrast won't bee to harsh that way. I still have leftovers from last time in, but being me and wanting to go POW, I just seldomly care about that. Actually, faint leftovers can give you a pretty darn vivid look! I already divided my bangs from the rest of the hair. I'm not worrying about "normal" hair in the mix, because I'd rather get those in then missing some blondies. Get the rest out of the way.
Gather your supplies. I posess three colours: Flamingo pink ( seen in the middle ), apple green ( which is actually turquoise, the full pot on the right ), and violet, which is of no importance now. But I wanted blue. BUT I'm a starving artist. Oh noooes! What to dooo? Think watercolours. I just recently bought a new green, although I had a little leftover in the can you see on the left. Somewhere along the dying processes I realized that having turquoise spots in when using pink, it turned blue-ish. Dah-daaah! ( Oh and get a colouring comb ( rather optional, fingers will work juuuuuust fine. ), a few clips, a pair of gloves and a DARK towel. Mothers do not appreciate green on red towels. The really don't... )
On to the fun part. As I said, I wanted blue, so I took several blobs of pink ( with my fingers, hehe ) and mixed it with the green rest. I actually did the mixing with the handle of my comb...
To make sure you'll be happy, drip a bit of your new colour on a piece of paper and smear. Remember that the actual colour might be lighter. ( Memo to self: more pink next time, it's still too matchy to the green )
Get your gloves and comb clean. Decide on where you want which colours. I planned the following: A green base and a thin blue top layer. It's not gonna look separated because of the nature of... hair... but it will rather blend this way. You could also make strands. Check below for ideas. Clip away the part you do not need. I recommend Working from botton to top, so I got the top layers on both sides out of the way.
Get dirrrty. ^^ Cover all of the stuff with the colour. Directions are known for their jelly-ish nature, so they do not drip or run. Niiice. Make really sure you also cover the whole length and not only the roots with enough colour. Twist a bit and clip away. Wash off every bit of jelly that gets on your skin. Quick. You don't wanna have green spots all over your forehead. o.0
Wash the comb and your fingers carefully. Release the unharmed hair and use the desired other colour. If that's not VERY MUCH darker than the lower colour, you can just let the strands lay down on the rest. Otherwise, clip out of the danger zone.
Look stupid for the time of choice. The pot says abour 15 minutes, but I just leave the bathroom and get back whenever the fact that I have jelly on my head pops back to my mind. You might also blowdry the hair with warm air, it seems to help the colours setting. Some people say "put the colour on, wash off immediately and re-apply leaving it in for 15 minutes." Bullshit in order to sell more colour if you ask me.
Rinse out very thoroughly. Get more hair wet than neccessary in order to get all the jelly out. Don't worry about the fact that you have separated it all so painfully before. Nothing is gonna happen by washing them out all together now. Check for hiding jelly by running your fingers all over the place. If you have solid drips on the gloves afterwards, rinse more. Don't use shampoo. Blowdry as usual. I like to keep my eyes closed as long as possible so I get to see the finished look just when it's dry. :P As I said, this time, the difference isn't too obvious. Hmpf. Anyways, the colours are EXTREMELY vivid and shining. You just gotta love this brand...
Subtle two-tone: Take ( or mix ) two colours that match eachother. For this special look, I try to do pink-only at first and apply purple after having washed my hair the first time afterwards. I just separate tiny layers from the top down and apply the colour with my fingers. So you basically have a purple layer on top of a pink one, then a pink one again and so on. You're separating horizonally, so to speak.
Another really nice thing to do is rather NOT subtle. Sadly, I can't find ANY good pictures with this look. :/ Again, taking one-wash-old hair ( I used to work on pink, but as I found out just today, turquoise works fine, too ), get your rat-tail comb and just reeeeally randomly section thin strands from the top down! Dip your fingers in any colour and apply it on the strand ( Dark colours are better used on REALLY thin sections as they tend to dominate the whole thing... ). Just let the strands fall down on the rest of the hair, you want it colourfull anyways, so why worry? Wash your fingers every time you use a new colour. I usually do that with the three colours I own and it's pretty harmonic, yet chaotic, if that makes any sense to you. But now I own a 4. one ( remember, we mixed one! ) I might as well try it with 4... Yay! By the time, the colours will all start fading. So from time to time, I just redo the process, giving a damn about the old sections and doing new ones. It actually gets more and more amazing. ^^
I have not tried raccoonies yet, but it might be just as simple as the rest. Take a section and draw lines on them! Gosh, I think I have to try this soon... I hope you had fun with this tutorial, and SHOW ME when you do a multi-style! :)
